about

This track is ......… about perception, “the way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted”. In this case, related to how people perceive and / or interpret music in different ways.

I am starting more and more to believe that my music is about “perception”, especially because it is something that I honestly do not fully know what it is, besides something that enables the listeners to hear it and notice or become aware of something, through the senses. A sort of sensory experience where the “something” can be anything (to a certain extent).

As part of my music making process, feedback plays a very important role. I use the feedback for several things, including whether to release a track, what is needed to complete it, is it good enough or do I park it and move on to something else, etc. While completing this track, I got feedback from a selection of “listeners” from my network. However, without asking, I always get feedback from those “listeners” in terms of how they perceive the track, what it reminds them of, their sensory experience. It is always quite nerve wracking to get feedback, awaiting to hear what others think about it, because it is so individual how it is perceived. At the same time, it is fascinating and beautiful how differently music can be “perceived”. The feedback I got from this track was also very different, here a some examples:

“This reminds me of Lars H.U.G. - Hamburg-Køln” (An instrumental track from 1984).
“When I hear this, I think of the BladeRunner 2049 movie / soundtrack”.
“Is the artist inspired by Pink Floyd? Makes me think about Ummagumma”.

I strongly believe that there are no right or wrongs when it comes to listening to music, which to me makes the concept “perception” even stronger and more powerful ……. and as an artist, very rewarding.
